So ... How high should your bar foot rail be off the floor?

For a combination or a floor mount bracket, about 7 inches to the top of the rail is typical. These types of brackets are by far the most common and work well for most applications. However, the height is fixed and you'll have little or no ability to make adjustments.

So when flexibility with respect to height is required, a bar mount bracket is often the way to go. They may be mounted at virtually any position on the bar face and are the choice for applications that require flexibility with respect to height.

That said, there are several things to consider and a few rules of thumb. Apart from aesthetics, the most important consideration will be that the bar rail is both functional and comfortable to use.

If your rail is for commercial use, about 7 inches to the top of the rail will serve you best. While it won't be ideal for everyone, it will accommodate the needs of most people of various heights using typical size bar stools or when patrons are standing at the bar.  However, if your rail is for a residential bar or kitchen island you should consider who will be using the rail most often. Once again, the approximately 7 inch height will often work best but if your family members are shorter than average or you have unusually high bar stools, raising the foot rail a few inches will make it more useful and far more comfortable.

Having a railing that is mounted higher than average is fine but avoid mounting it too low. Having to over reach to rest your feet can be uncomfortable and detract from its usefulness.
