How to Measure Your Bar for a Foot Rail (Step-by-Step Guide)
Ordering a bar foot rail is simple when you know your measurements. Getting it right the first time saves you time, money, and frustration. Here’s a clear step-by-step guide to help you measure like a pro.
Step 1: Measure Each Bar Section
Use a tape measure to record the length of each straight section of your bar. Write down the numbers carefully.
-
For single straight bars, measure the full run.
-
For L-shaped or U-shaped bars, measure each side separately.
Step 2: Note the Corners and Angles
If your bar has turns, you’ll need fittings (elbows) to connect sections.
-
Standard angles are 90° and 135°.
-
For custom angles, measure carefully and double-check.
Step 3: Factor in Bracket Offsets for Multi-Sided Bars
For bars with multiple sides, remember that the bracket offset will affect how much tubing you need.
-
Example: a 6" center line offset means you’ll need an extra 6" of tubing, minus the length taken up by the elbows used at the corners.
-
Always include this in your total measurement so you don’t come up short.
Step 4: Account for Bracket Placement
Foot rail brackets are typically spaced about every 48 inches for support.
-
Combination brackets (Y-style) need both a floor and face mounting surface.
-
Face-mount (BR511A) or floor-mount brackets can be used when space is tight.
Step 5: Plan for Splices
Because tubing comes in maximum lengths (usually 48" per piece), longer runs require internal splices. Place a bracket at each splice location to hide the seam.
Step 6: Double-Check Before Ordering
Re-measure everything once more — especially corners and angles. Accurate measurements mean your rail will fit perfectly the first time.
Pro Tip: Don’t Forget End Caps
End caps finish the tubing and prevent sharp edges. They’re available in all finishes, so match them to your rail for a clean, professional look.
